A Proud Tradition
A Brief History
1899 -1932 - Dating back to the Boer War, 1899 - 1902, The Department of National Defence operated a rifle range to train soldiers on 35 acres of land that was eventually leased to the Inglewood Golf Club in 1932. At the end of the rifle range there was a long concrete structure called The Butts, behind which men were protected while raising and lowering targets for the riflemen. The golf club later utilized the top of The Butts as an elevated tee box for two golf holes.
1932 - Four men, Roy Clart, Joe Toyne, A.E. Jacques and Joe Rudolph founded and registered Inglewood Golf Club on April 13, 1932. Large blue spruce trees behind the present 11th green were later planted to commemorate the founding members.
1948 - Jack Hutton purchased 96% of the shares of Inglewood Golf Club. The four founding members retained the remaining shares. The course had oiled sand greens which required leveling with a cocoa mat prior to putting. Each green had a tall marker flag directly behind the green and a small rod in the hole. Every tee area had a wooden tee box, which contained a container of sand and a bucket of water. One would moisten the sand and fashion a tee to set the ball on.
1950 - The course layout was revised and greens were installed throughout the course. Brush was cleared and an extra nine holes, dubbed the "Ladies Nine" was created; playing at about 2700 yards. Manure Pile - INGLEWOODS FIRST AND WORST HAZARD. Cow manure from the stockyards was stored along the right side of the 12th fairway, approximately 3 feet deep and 150 yards long; and was to be eventually used as fertilizer on the course.
1958 - In order to obtain beer license, Inglewood Golf Club became a limited company requiring each member of the club to purchase a $20.00 share. A Board of Directors was also elected pursuant to terms of the Companies Act.
1961 - Jack Hutton sold approximately 30 acres of land at the north end of the course to a group of businessmen who opened Golfland, a par 3 and driving range on the property. As 6 or 7 holes were lost from the original course, new holes were built south of the present third green and the Ladies nine was absorbed into the main course.
1962 - A new Clubhouse was built at its present location at a cost of $48,000. The Pro Shop was in the basement where the present men's locker room is. The course itself was completely redesigned.
1964 - The Curling Rink costing $87,000 was completed providing a year round operation.
1974 - The City of Calgary purchased the golf club. The Board of Directors applied to the City for a long-term lease to perpetuate the golf club. The City agreed to one-year leases so the club could prove its ability to run the course successfully.
1978 - After three successful one-year leases, the City granted the golf club a twenty year lease (signed in 1980) with financial payments to be re-negotiated every four years. Part of the course was closed for construction of the Deerfoot Trail, leaving all of the front nine holes and only five holes of the back nine in play.
1979 - The new city designed layout was opened including new holes on the old Jefferies & Sons lands.
1980 - The Inglewood Golf & Curling Club (1980) was registered under the Societies Act (non-profit). The long-term lease started in 1978 was now finalized in keeping with the terms of the Act. The driving range was opened at a start up cost of $20,000.
1983 - 1984 - All distances on the golf course were re-surveyed and expressed in meters including all signs and score cards. After two years of frustration, the course distances were changed back to yards.
1986 - A new free standing Pro Shop was constructed at a cost of $241,087.
1987 - An addition to the Clubhouse was officially opened on March 30, 1987 featuring, new offices, a members room, a boardroom and a renovated kitchen. The total cost $557,690.
1995 - The new slope handicap system was put into play.
1996 - 1997 - New landscaped tee boxes using decorative building blocks were completed for play on hole #1 in 1996 and hole #10 with putting green in 1997.
